Sara M. Norrevik
Sara M. Norrevik, PhD student at the University at Buffalo (SUNY)
won the Best Student Paper Award for the paper “Trust Matters: Support for Comprehensive Trade Agreements in the European Parliament” at the ECSA-C Biennial 2018, Toronto.
The European Community Studies Association in Canada is devoted to support young scholars in the field of EU and European Studies related research.
Sara's paper focuses on determinants of individual trade policy attitudes in European Parliament, draws on socio-trophic and economic arguments and broader literature on public trust, and creates an original data set from observed roll call votes. "Trust Matters. Support for Comprehensive Trade Agreements in the European Parliament" analyzes the support for recent comprehensive trade agreements in the European Parliament. It presents a new predictor, Trust in government, within a framework that includes economic and non-economic factors. The empirical analysis shows that higher levels of trust in government in their home countries make Members of the European Parliament more likely to support comprehensive trade agreements, controlling for other factors.
